Have you visited the new Penderyn Llandudno Distillery in Lloyd St yet?!
Penderyn is the home of Welsh Whisky, and now exports to over 50 countries. They opened a new distillery in a former school in Lloyd St (pictured) in the centre of Llandudno in May 2021. This tourist attraction has already picked up a Go North Wales 2021 Tourism Award, and Trip Advisor has ranked them ‘#1 tour to do in Llandudno’. The distillery is also on the Red Bus Route.
The Distillery is open 7 days a week. You can visit the shop which sells all of Penderyn’s whiskies and spirits, as well as a range of merchandise, or take the hour-long tour, which starts in the exhibition area (pictured) where you can read about Penderyn’s history, as well as the stories of the school and Llandudno.
Next up is the distilling hall where the unique Faraday Still is housed (pictured). This still produces a spirit at an industry high of 92%, which gets rid of the heavier oils and impurities, meaning that Penderyn’s whiskies are light, fruity and flavoursome. After that you’ll nose barrels, and discover how Penderyn manages its casks.
Finally, you’ll finish in their beautiful tasting bar (pictured), where you’ll have the chance to sample a drink or two. And if you’re driving, you will be given a free miniature to take home. And for those who want to indulge a little more, two-and-a-half hour Masterclasses are available.
There’s also a large carpark at the rear, which you can access down St Mary’s Road, where Penderyn customers can park their car for the day to explore Llandudno.
In 2000, Penderyn was the first distillery in Wales for over 100 years when they started distilling in the Brecon Beacons. It began when a group of friends had a conversation in a local pub, and decided to bring back Welsh Whisky. They were actually pioneers in World Whisky, as only a handful of countries including Scotland, Ireland, Japan and the US had whisky distilleries. Now, pretty much every country on the world produces whisky.
The story of how Penderyn achieved its aim of becoming a world class whisky is fascinating, but ultimately it was the interest of renowned whisky expert Dr Jim Swan, from Scotland. His influence on the company, and his respect internationally meant that Penderyn quickly became part of the global whisky conversation.
Penderyn Distillery have just had a remarkable series of results in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, which means they have won over 70 top awards worldwide. Penderyn also produces Brecon Gins, Siddiqui Rums, Brecon Five Vodka and Merlyn, a cream liqueur.
So please come and visit us! We’d love to welcome you to the home of Welsh whisky, where you will meet our friendly and knowledgeable staff. More info here: www.penderyn.wales
